Everyone probably knows of a traffic signal they dread coming up on. Mine is the light at Burnet Rd and Greenlawn Parkway, in the case that I want to turn left off of Greenlawn onto Burnet, or go across Burnet into the parking lot of the shopping center. I've never encountered a light that long, anywhere. I can understand that Burnet Rd traffic should take priority over Greenlawn's, but the wait is ridiculous.

So what are your nominations for long traffic signals that you dread? Anyone know what the longest traffic signal is in the city? Would be interesting to find out.

That's a tough one since Austin has some of the longest traffic signals of any city I've lived in or visited.

Lately the one leaving the Alamo on South Lamar has been bugging me.

Greenlawn and Burnet is a bad one, I agree. Also, Justin Lane and Burnet Road.

My pet peeve though, is the light at 2222 and Parkcrest. Traffic coming in and going out 2222 gets several minutes, traffic going in or out of the neighborhood at Highland Terrace (?) sometimes has maybe 10 - 12 seconds.

Add to that, traffic coming in from 2222 will extend their turn by running the light and blocking the intersection, and the neighborhood traffic's turn is then lost.

Also.... a dimwitted decision to restripe a westbound lane at that intersection has made it dangerous. The city needs to change it back to the way it was originally striped, and they need to have a traffic cop to stop the frequent, dangerous and illegal maneuver of crossing a couple of traffic lanes at the very last minute and cutting in the line headed out 2222.

Northland and burnet rd in the evening. Coming out of phils ice house I sat at the light for 10 minutes before giving up. The burnet light would turn yellow, turn red, then immediately turn green again. the northland light never turned green

Sounds like a malfunction.

I agree that Austin has the longest light timing I've encountered. An example I'm familiar with is Brodie at Harpers Ferry. I was so surprised I timed it the next time I went there. It was exactly two minutes.

Now that's not really excessive, considering how Brodie deserves highest priority. But where I think the city does it wrong is they don't adjust timing for actual traffic. When Brodie has no traffic, which it sometimes doesn't have, why make the cross street wait so long?

All other places I've experienced have variable light timing.

Try turning left on Lamar Blvd as you're going westbound on Koenig Ln. In the morning, that light can be a 10 minute wait. Ridiculous.

Yes, I know what you are talking about. Exiting NB Mopac to get onto NB 360 (south intersection, by the Barton Creek Mall) is very long. Often the line gets backed up almost all the way to the main lanes of Mopac, and when you are far back you can count on 3 cycles before you even get through the intersection. Even (or mostly) on weekends. I'm sure the panhandlers love it; there is always someone "working" that light.

West on 12th crossing Lamar. if the light turns red as you get there, leave your car, go into the Tavern, order a beverage , drink it, pay for it, go back to your car, and the light will turn green for you in a few seconds. At least, that's what it feels like.
