Default getting your Texas drivers license

For anyone on that venture, here is what you need:

social security card
birth certificate
registration
insurance
car title and any paperwork showing it's paid, if it is
your old license, (which they take and keep)
filled out form, (fill out ahead of time)

They make copies of everything. Oh, and if you have a chauffeurs license from another state you don't need one here.

You should also add a couple of hours. It can take forever. Go to Round Rock and save some time.

what if you don't own the car and only drive someone else's occasionally? Why would they need your car's information?

Also, do you need insurance if you haven't been driving?

Obviously, if you don't own a vehicle, you wouldn't have a title, registration or insurance. I think the 'vehicle first' process is the Texas way to make sure MANY more vehicles are properly registered and insured vs 'back home' registration and NO insurance. Some people will skirt the process, no matter the safeguards; but I had no problems getting my vehicles squared away before getting my DL.

It is also my understanding that operating a vehicle that is not properly registered or insured falls on the DRIVER at the time of the stop. If you're driving someone else's vehicle, make sure it's covered!

Oh, and getting my thumb prints was a first for me too. What is the logic behind not having to get a chauffeurs license when you have to in other states?

From the Texas Drivers Handbook:
Quote:
c. An application for an original driver license must be accompanied by
evidence of financial responsibility or a statement that the applicant does
not own a motor vehicle for which maintenance of financial responsibility
is required under the Texas Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Act.

Evidence of financial responsibility presented must be in at least the
minimum amount required by the Act, and must cover each motor vehicle
that the applicant owns and for which the applicant is required to
maintain financial responsibility.
