Dawson is an exemplary elementary school in south central Austin, (S. First between Oltorf and 71), you should be able to rent a home nearby in your price range and be only a few minutes from work too!

Yep- I was going to suggest areas just west of St. Edward's University. There may also be some rentals just north of it as well but I am not sure how affordable they would be.

The apartment complexes are overpriced filth, the public water borders on Third World quality, and the air at the intersection of 183 and Cypress Creek smells like a cesspool! I mean, you're driving along and when you get to that intersection it's like a hurricane of poop went up your nose!

LOL. Never been to CP, but perhaps this is a little embellished?

I did not realize that the VA has offices in that area. Neighborhoods and schools in that immediate area are not the best. Schools tend to be best on the West side of town. Going East to West is a pretty easy commute on Hwy 71/Ben White Blvd. any time of day.

I suggest you look on the West side of town near Hwy 71. There are some really nice apartment complexes along Southwest Parkway, and along South Loop 1, south of Hwy 71, some are gated. Also look near Brodie Lane just South of Hwy 71, in the Sunset Valley area. There are several nice gated apartment complexes within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants in the Sunset Valley complex. The apartments along Monterey Oaks Blvd West of there would be my last choice, they tend to have higher crime then others in the area.

Austin has very low violent crime rates, but property crime rates are high, especially around apartment complex parking lots and shopping centers. Gated apartment communities have much less of that.

Google is your friend. Eanes no doubt qualifies with only the 2nd critera (Schools that score in the top 10% on state assessments) since no way are 40% from disadvantage background, unless disadvantaged means parents do not drive a European car.

Texas Education Agency - Blue Ribbon Schools

Purpose

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public elementary, middle and high schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement. In addition to being honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., where each school receives a plaque and flag signifying their status, these schools serve as models for other schools throughout the state and the nation.
Eligibility

The program requires schools to meet either of two assessment criteria:
  • Schools that have at least 40% of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance in accordance with state assessment systems
  • Schools that score in the top 10% on state assessments
Of the schools submitted by each state, at least 1/3 must meet the first criterion of having 40% of the students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program allows both elementary and secondary schools to be recognized in the same year.

The U.S. Department of Education allows the commissioner of education for Texas to nominate 26 schools.
