Oddball question re: meat & sports
Ok, just for fun, I gotta ask this question:
How big of an outcast will I be in Austin if I don't eat beef (I'm not a vegetarian, just don't eat red) and I don't know a single thing about football?

We'll be two peas in a pod, except I'm moving to San Antonio! I don't eat red meat (well, maybe once in a great while) and my favorite food on the planet is sushi! Oh yeah, and the only sports I'm into is Dancesport, gymnastics and ice skating!

You will be just fine. I have a good friend that is a UT alum and has NEVER been to a football game much less watched one.
There is a restaurant on the UT campus called O's and the chef came from an upscale dining establishment in Austin. I have not been there but I have heard nothing but good things about it. Not your typical "campus food". Sushi, I think I'm the only one that has never eaten sushi at times. http://www.oscampuscafe.com/

the biggest college football game of the year will be played in Austin tomorrow evening between Texas and Ohio State. You don't have to know anything about football to feel the electricity in the air and enjoy hearing all those Longhorn fans whooping and hollering.

People will point and stare at you. Mothers will hide their children when you are around. People in cars will lock their doors when you drive by.
I know a bunch of vegetarians. You won't feel out of place. As far as the football goes, no one will give you are hard time if you don't keep up with football. Football is fun though. You should give it a try. Going to a game is fun whether you know anything about football or not.

College football in the fall is where it's all at and the embodiment of school/college spirit in the US.

I'm not big on football either, but I made my son buy me one of those 'crome' UT 'horns' symbols to put on my car just so I'd feel like 'one of the crowd'. I have never even put so much as a bumper sticker on my car ever! (been driving for about 35 years). A few 'rah rah - hook'um horns!' and/or horn getures and your ignorance will not be noticed!

Oh, also, noone cares what you eat around here...I found Asian restaurants are not as plentiful as I would like, but I came from Houston - the restaurant capital of the US!

IF today's crowds are anything to go by, the 'Horns MUST schedule more games of this magnitude for the benefit of the city of Austin and the surrounding areas! I bleed Orange too!
If you don't eat read meat, all that means is more for us!
Ummmm...Houston is about eight times bigger than Austin so expecting the same number of restaurants, especially ethnic, is unrealistic. I do know there are a lot of asian restaurants in the N. Austin area though.

There are a ton of vegetarian and natural food restaurants here, and most of the mainstream restaurants have vegetarian offerings. That gives you an idea of how many veggie people there are in Austin --- LOTS! It's good that you at least eat chicken so you can get SOME barbecue. I was a total vegetarian for 17 years and then started eating meat after moving here because the smell of BBQ was too good to resist. ALso, I hated football until I got infected with Longhorn fever, now I'm an addict of college football. So, either way you slice it, you can come here and stay as you are or change as you like, we'll enjoy having you here regardless of all that. Just be a polite driver and it'll all be good.
