I guess as a houstonian i just don't get the "but it is still houston!" comment. the "but" so taking into account whatever pollution, crime, and traffic issues there is still a "but". what is that "but"?
edit: made my post nicer

Also the whole educated thing, I'm pretty sure Houston and Dallas beat out Austin because there are more higher paying jobs in abundance there, and of course, you have to be educated to get those jobs, right? Austin might win out when it comes to "best place to start a small business"
I can't speak about Dallas cause I haven't spent enough time there, but Houston is quite a sophisticated town and people there are educated and very nice as well. Personally, I think Houston has a lot more to offer than Austin.
Do you like to make guesses? If so then you can believe what you want about Dallas and Houston education. But the fact is that Austin is better educated - and probably has been for a very long time. A higher percentage of the population has a college degree than Houston or Dallas. The link above shows it.
There are more jobs in Houston and Dallas, as expected for their size. But I'm not at all convinced they are higher paying, and not city has jobs in abundance. Unemployment in Austin (7.4%) is lower than Houston (8.6%) or Dallas (8.2%).
Unemployment Rates for Metropolitan Areas
Median household income for Austin is $50,236.
Houston: $42,797
Dallas; $41,266
Dallas (city) QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau
Income correlates strongly with education. I think it should be abundantly clear that Austin has a higher education level and the income that goes with it.

Lots of places "went blue" the last election cycle. When a democrat wins the presidency, that usually happens. Still, if someone claimed Houston is more liberal than Austin, they'd probably get laughed at. You know that.
Nice about your mayor, parade, aethism, and diversity though.

Thumbs up on digging up the rest of the stats, but this one doesn't really prove that Sun Belt weather is more desirable... There could be many other reasons to migrate -- cost of living, jobs, pollution, and people might be moving *despite* the weather. A more direct connection is needed.
I found this reference, which suggest that people are willing to accept lower wages, on average, to live in warmer climate:
Moore on Climate Preferences, Bryan Caplan | EconLog | Library of Economics and Liberty
It also brings up a good point that retirees, which are generally free of other job-related influences, tend to pick warm areas to retire. It doesn't necessarily mean that people of all ages prefer warm climate, but old ones definitely do

Houston wages top growth nationwide in first quarter - Houston Business Journal
Also, income does not always correlate with education. Especially in 2011. Heard of the global revolution going on?
Austin is still an up and coming city compared to the much more established Houston and Dallas. Houston and Dallas also have had a much larger corporate presence there for a much longer time that Austin. I haven't even mentioned oil yet.
Most people that live in Texas know that and are humble enough to admit it. However, when you're living in God's gift to Texas: Austin. And suffer from "Austitude", you probably won't.

facts? if you mean to say that "mexican is the worst race to be in austin" as a fact, then you are wrong. and i only know one thing about you, that you're the last person to make such claims when you don't know how to even speak spanish.
Texas, the bigoted state... oh yes! Meanwhile, San Francisco the highly recognized liberal mecca of the US... you think there aren't any bigots here? I've seen more than I've ever seen in Austin... True story! I even saw more bigots here during the Pride Parade then I would ever see in Texas.... but nobody makes mention of that.
But okay... you're new to these posts and I'll let it slide a bit.... I've explained myself so many times how wrong people's perceptions are and I'm tired of reexplaining myself.

Unfortunately your link shows wage growth %. Still doesn't make Houston's per capita income higher. As for the global revolution - I fail to see your point. We are talking about the United States, and more narrowly Texas. Wages go up with education. It is very simple.

I'll concede your point, technically, but I do think it's unscientifically reliable to say that humans do prefer moderate/warm weather over cold weather, in general.
If I ever was to leave Austin, because it is apparently dripping in some invisible "Austintude", which I've never noticed or encountered in 26 real life years here, but learned of on these boards, I'd really like to live in Flagstaff AZ. I love it there. But my wife says "nope, too cold". End of that idea. Gotta obey the wife and she can't handle cold.
