Question Seeking affordable/low cost psychiatry..

Student, working 2 jobs, Austin TX .. dealing with severe depression for a long time now and I think I need to do something but I don't have a clue where to begin. I have no insurance.. so affordable is the key word right now. Thanks for any insight.

Have you talked to your regular medical doctor about it? They can usually prescribe anti-depressants and probably refer you to other help.

You an also try the City/County health services groups. http://communitycaretx.org/behaviora..._services.html

Where are you a student at?

ACC provides counseling for students:

Welcome to Counseling Services

UT provides it as well:

CMHC UT Counseling and Mental Health

I would bet whatever school that you're a student at will have something similar at no cost to students. Also, if they can't help you, they'll be sure to have recommendations for you.

most uninsured/low income have to access services through MHMRA. not the best out there and they virtually got defunded - but only free treatment and services in the state. you have to qualify, but a diagnosis from one of their doctors of major depression fits their criteria

there are emergency intake centers if needed. call 4-1-1

Not saying this is a silver bullet by any means, but a daily exercise program might help -- and its free and much safer than any drugs that might be prescribed. Try walking or running -- or whatever -- 1/2 hour a day. Can't hurt and might very well help.

I struggled with mood issues (depression and anxiety) most of my life. Then a few years ago, I quit eating grains and lowered my sugar intake. I haven't had depression since. Some of us are affected more acutely by sugar than others. Several months ago I came across an interesting article How I Overcame Bipolar II (and Saved My Own Life) - Forbes about someone else having a similar experience.

Also cigarette smoking has been implicated in depression for some people. If you smoke, quit. It's hard to quit but can be done. It's really amazing how what we ingest can affect us.

Do you go to a college? Most campuses have mental health clinics, it is most often totally free. Also, most communities have a social service agency, where they can recommend a clinic w/ sliding scale fees. And, also often companies have counseling programs that you can attend that are free for several visits. I forget the name of the program...Someone?? Hopefully you will find some program that suits you soon. All the above programs are free, to sliding scale, except the work should be free. I wish you well, don't give up. First step is doing what you're doing, seeking help. Good job!!
I thought most states have implemented the 2-1-1 for resource information, hoping yours does, try calling it, and asking for listings of free service providers.

Thanks for the great responses Im not sure I want to be medicated.. just some sit down perspective and advise is what Im thinking and then see what long term can be done.. Im a little scared of all the pills floating around out there. I do smoke and I am certain to quit very soon especially if it is only making my depression worse. Like wise I think the comment about exercise is useful too.
