My wife and are I are looking for a safe studio apartment, size does not matter, nor do amenities. It is nuts how much Austin has increased in price, a few years back we where going to make the move from Oregon to Texas, the prices seemed a lot better back then. Is this still doable in Austin for $700?

Sure! Get an apartment locator, they make all the difference, you cannot get a sense of the rental market from CL or on-line review sites.

Yes, they are between $500 and $800 for a nice one. Good luck with your search!

It is so true, I have been seeing those apartment locators, but was not sure if they were legit. They seem to have all the good apartments!! Thank you for the reassurance I'm going to give one a call right now. Happy New year BTW!

I don't know that you need an intermediary, even if you're looking to move long distance.

You might try:
- using a search engine (e.g., Google) to locate apartments and then visiting their websites,
- then checking them in apartmentratings.com (which sometimes has dicey reviews, but you can get a good idea of who's who and what's what overall),
- and finally viewing the apartment complexes in Google maps (or Bing.com maps, which is excellent).

Then when you speak to the apartment managers, you have some information -- and, if they're online, they can also point out the locations of their specific vacancies, and you can make a choice from there.

That's what we've done on our last couple of long-distance moves, and it's worked out well.

Apartment locators are totally legit and take TONS of the hassle out of relocating. They're helpful even if you're long distance too. Might as well throw CL out, it usually only causes headaches.

And yes, you can get a studio for <700, in S/SW Austin.

Get an apartment locator... some offers are only available through that route.

But I recommend Barton's Mill on South Lamar. I had a great studio years ago and never felt unsafe. It's possible it's changed a lot because it's been nearly a decade but it is worth checking out.

you can prob get a 1br for $700. Craigslist is mostly good as a gauge for what you might expect to pay in an area. Generally the scams dont mention a specific area of austin.

Apartments for Rent - PadMapper Apartment Search for Oodle, Apartments.com, Rent.com, Kijiji, and Craigslist Apartments is a really good resource for finding apartments in your price range. It shows lots of options for 1bdrm, 1 bath units in that price range in Austin.
