You're very welcome! If you're looking for the music, nightlife and college area, renting near UT might be a great place for you. Or somewhere downtown -- very bike friendly around there.

Is it affordable? I am thinking about going back to grad school after having my year residency.

There are affordable places near both. Depends on the size/type of housing you want, really. Some really cute places, and the savings on gas if you walked/biked a lot would help, too.

Define affordable? What, to you, is affordable? What will you be making?

I think my house is quite affordable. My mother thinks I am crazy to pay more than $300 on mortgage. Which one of us knows what "affordable" is.

Like beauty, affordability is in the eye of the beholder.

What do you want to spend? then we can tell you if it's possible.

That's quite low, I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but 2/2 houses (from what a friend who was looking near downtown and UT told me last week) were around the $1,500 mark.

Maybe outlying areas, but not near downtown or UT for anything in good shape.

Sorry. We posted at the same time.

The last time I looked at apartments down town, a small one room loft could not be had for $800, much less a 2/2. There is a lot of student housing downtown, and you can find cheap apartments, but they are situated to accomodate roommate situations, OR they are in not so nice parts of town, OR you can get an apartment by yourself, but all your neighbors will be drunk college kids throwing up on you stairs and staying up all night.

$800 doesn't seem feasible to me. I could be wrong though.

People complain about the heat, but after being here for a while the heat stopped bothering me. One's blood thins, and then cold becomes more trouble than heat. One learns to walk slowly and enjoy the warmth. I exercise later at night or early in the morning, wear a hat in the sun, and put up a sunscreen in my car when it's parked. Get a home with a sprinkler system. That will make watering during droughts much easier. Allergies can be bad. Cedar pollen is spiked, and it can be very irritating. If you suffer from allergies, I suggest settling on the east side to have less irritation from ozone. The prevailing wind is from the southeast, so homes on the east side don't get all the pollution from the city. Happily the east side is the cheaper side too. Traffic can be really bad, so try to live close to your work.
