For Mexican I am swaying more towards Matt's El Rancho (9 minutes from hotel) but Chuy's is a very close second (15 minutes from hotel). Not final on that one. Trudy's is the closet to the hotel (6 minutes) but not enough good comments on them.

Our only free afternoon we'll stroll South Congress and maybe get pizza down there.

Anyone want to try change my mind on any of the above feel free.
Don't let the naysayers sway you! I love Rudy's!

For burgers, Hopdoddy's is definitely good. I also love the lamb burger at FINO.

The two 183 locations are slammed at lunch-time...try to get there before 11:30 or after 1:00 unless you don't mind standing in line.

By the bye, made it to Matt's for the first time last night. I've not seen that many people in a restaurant since our last visit to the Oasis . Food was very good, parking is abysmal. Traffic along there on a Saturday night--priceless.

Yeah Matt's has been here forever another Tex-Mex Place my parents like to go to is El Patio on Guadalupe which is good which has also been around forever. Amaya's Taco Village is another good place.

Amaya's Taco Village

We will be staying in hotel I-35/71 interchange. The locations listed are Driftwood, Round Rock, and Airport (which I think is in the airport). Round Rock looks closer but something else I read talked about the Driftwood location? Which would be better?

Also, if we only have one free afternoon, is there enough to do walking down 6th Street? It looks interesting.

THANKS!
There are a lot of better BBQ places than Salt Lick. It would not even make my top 10 list.

Matt's has wonderful Tex-Mex.

But County Line is not the best BBQ. Rudy's and several others are better.

BBQ is so subjective as is Tex-Mex, IMHO I like Rudy's, Salt Lick. not a huge fan of Coopers or City Market. I am a big fan of the BBQ I smoke at home. Please don't cook pulled pork in a crock pot.... it needs to smoke for 17 hours, no sauce needed. :-)

I would have agreed with you until I went back this year for the first time in 8 years. We stopped going ages ago because the bbq was just ok. The last 3 times we asked for super fatty moist and it came out great. All three times at least one person did not get the moist so we sent it back.

I loved rudy's extra moist (you can even find posts where I extoll the virtues of rudys extra moist), but the flavor and moistness are not nearly as good as salt lick's extra moist.

If you get lean, all bets are off.

How about a cast iron Dutch oven? I think my pulled pork has morphed into carnitas(not that there's anything wrong with that! ) As nice as our built-in DCS grill is, I can't imagine super-long smoking on it.

What time can we come over and may I bring a side dish or dessert ?

I love Carnitas and Barbacoa :-)

Pork needs to be smoked in a cheap/crappy smoker over Hickory chunks IMHO. The smoke does it's magic. The hard part is getting up every three hours in the middle of the night to tend to the smoker.

I'm hungry now....

Have any of you tried to use a kamado grill like the big green egg? Im thinking about trading in my gas grill for a kamado.

Reminds me of smoking a whole hog for 4th of July a couple of years back in the '70s at our apartment complex. Quite a few of us stayed up all night, playing volleyball and tending to the fire. Next day was tennis and the swimming pool and we were almost too tired to eat by that afternoon!

Ah, the good old days!
