2nd part of my dilemima regarding move and registration....
Did not want to over ask this in my earlier post. Thought it might get burried.

We have a 1981 VW Rabbit pick-up ... diesel.
Am I facing problems since it is diesel for Travis county ... and also age????
TIA

I was under the impression that emission standards are held to the year of the vehicle, sorta like grandfathering. Is the catalytic converter and other systems working?

1981-86
Check the following:

  • O2 sensor (The signal from the O2 Sensor provides a wealth of information on how the vehicle is running.)
  • EGR valve and EGR hose
  • Ignition timing and system (advanced timing and ignition components are some of the most common problems)
  • Vacuum lines (deterioration of vacuum lines, inlet manifold seals become more prevalent causes with age)
  • Catalytic converter
  • Primary feedback sensor failure, including oxygen sensor, MAP/MAF, TPS, RPM, and CTS sensors
Not sure if all this applies to diesels, though......

It won't be tested for emissions for two reasons:

1. Diesels are not emissions tested

2. Exempt over 25 years old.

Needs safety inspected for brakes, lights, wipers, horn etc. only. Costs less than other vehicles to be inspected.
