Hi All,

Right now I live in CT and I got an offer from Texas state university ,San Marcos. I would love to move to Austin and do the daily commute of 20/30 mins rather than living in a student town. (I looked for the apartments and they are really small)

Which place in Austin is good for daily commute to San Marcos?

Thanks,
Lily

You want something in South Austin. Are you looking to rent or buy? Are you looking for a school for your kids? Anything else you can tell us? We can give you better information if we know what you are looking for.

OP, I don't see anything wrong with living in San Marcos. You'd sure save a lot of money, both in gas and rent, if you did. Keep in mind that Austin is a bigger college town than SM.

It's your choice, but personally, I would not make such a long commute. And I sure as heck wouldn't drive down IH-35 (aka the "Highway of Death").

Bit of a misnomer here... IH-35 accounted for 12 fatal accidents in Travis and Hays counties combined. You were 4 times more likely to be in a fatal accident on a city street or FM/RR road.

To the OP.

Pretty straight commute that would be against the regular flow of traffic, so highway speeds the whole time. A spot in south Austin would leave you an easy 20-30 minute commute (which is better than a 20-30 minute commute through traffic, IMO). This would leave you within striking distance of the bigger downtown/entertainment/city stuff that Austin can provide.

To echo earlier questions, what are you looking for in your living situation? That'll help narrow it down.

Congrats on the job!

Look again at San Marcos. The traffic in and around Austin is horrific! San Marcos is really a nice town.

I have to agree, we've considered moving to San Marcos. Nice town to live in, easy commute to Austin for the city lights. It's not all college students, really!

San Marcos is beautiful, they are smaller cities near San Marcos like Kyle and Buda, New Braunfels, you might check these out. I live in Plum Creek subdivision Kyle, its family oriented and just a really nice place to live. I lived here almost 7 years and I love it. Its a quick drive to San Marcos, there are houses and apartments to rent it depends on what you willing to pay.

Lily, I'm not sure if your offer was for work or school, but it sounded like the former. In either case, if it were me, I'd opt to stay in San Marcos, which is a nice town and a short commute would make life easier. I can't argue that Austin offers more stuff to do, but its still very close. As time passes, I think life is more fun if the work/school commutes are easy. For the fun stuff, which is usually less frequent, a bit longer drive is not so bad. Plus, the fun stuff is actually more enjoyable if its a bit removed from the daily necessities, I think.

My sister taught at Texas State for almost 7 years and lived in South/Southwest Austin (Shady Hollow). The commute is treacherous and can often be total gridlock there and back. She would not recommend it and would tell you to live in San Marcos. Not to mention the cost of gas and wear and tear on your car. It may seem like it is not that far but it is a well traveled main route.

I second this, great points.
