You might check with The Texas Asia Society or Chinese Consulate in Houston as potential resources. They may have information on programs in other Texas cities. My son's friend loves the Mandarin immersion program at her elementary school in Houston.

The immersion staff at Doss did visit that Houston immersion program last fall to study how they work.

I totally get your concerns but I think you can chill out a bit. I do, however, think a Mandarin immersion program would be well received here.

Wish I could say that for San Antonio. Sigh. Well maybe someday I'll come back to Austin.

So, I live in the SF bay area and I can't believe you are complaining about "fried chicken fingers" when they are so prolific here! They don't serve breaded chicken strips any more often in Texas than they do in Cali. Also, the SF bay area has plenty of politicians and other politicos to be embarrassed about. If you hate George Bush that much, then stay in Cali.

Default Doss Elementary Chinese Immersion

Dear All:
Doss Elementary is currently a high performing campus located within Austin ISD. Doss was selected by the district to host its' first and only Chinese Immersion Program. After a year of rich, FLES instruction every day for every Kinder and 1st grade student, the Immersion Program has gained momentum. We had 60 slots to fill and we had 90 applicants.

The district is fully supporting and financing our Chinese Immersion program as well as the One World Schools language program (an exploratory language program where every elementary student will be exposed to the five IB languages throughout their elementary career).

We will start the Immersion program in the fall of 2013-2014.

I am currently (6/7/2013)at the Utah Chinese Consortium which we applied for and were accepted to. This is a networking group of the experts in the country on Chinese Immersion. We are excited to be part of this.

Unfortunately, we are not open to transfers. You must live in the Doss zone to be considered.

I just wanted to clarify, Austin ISD IS starting Chinese Immersion. To my knowledge, we are the 2nd program in the state of Texas.

Janna Griffin, Principal of Doss Elementary

Default and more...

JUST FYI...

1)Immersion is not designed for native speakers. The Chinese Immersion program is designed for native English speakers. We do have a few native speakers in the program. But, again, this is not the reason for the program.

2)You apparently only saw a few of the flags students posted for our Cultural Awareness event. Students made flags from their home state, or home country, or country of heritage. They were all hung prior to our very popular cultural heritage night where we celebrate cultures from all over the world that are represented at Doss. It's one of my favorite events.

3) I can't do anything about George Bush.

JG

Round Rock ISD would be nice for (another) Chinese immersion in Texas. Seems like a good sized population of Mandarin speakers to get that going there.

Thanks for the info.

- Do you have a link with additional info.

- What's the advantage/disadvantage for a "native speaker" in the program. Why let any in if it's designed for non native speakers?

- Can you do anything about B.O?.....they're alot more alike than different.
