I can't speak to jobs but wish you the best in finding the right place to relocate! What else is important to you in a home/community?

Neil! That you undertook this search and took the time to post all of these sites in response to the English lady, I'm just very impressed and thank you for going out of your way in such a big and informative way. That was truly generous.

You're very welcome. Having moved from the UK myself, I know how tough it can be. I can honesetly say that since moving to Texas, I've met more nice, caring and down-to-earth people than I did in 5 years in California and 28 years in England.

With the amount of development going on in the CenTex area, a builder/construction person would have a hard time AVOIDING employment around here! There are a lot of elder care facilities in the area as well, so with qualifications and references you shouldn't have much of a problem either.
Welcome to the madness that is life in America. A few things will make your eyes pop, if recent experience with those from across the pond is anything to go by. I'd forgotten my own experiences way back when until the recent visit by first timers reminded me of them.
The 16 year old will find his/her own set soon enough, no problem there as long as they're not shy. With an English accent, they'll be flocking to your house thinking you're royalty in no time.
The 8 year old, a little more difficult to gauge. There are those that will fit in, in no time, and only remember their other friends when they email, write(do they still do that) or call.
Americans, I should say we, but it still feels odd to, are a generally friendly lot with minimal hang ups about status, so you don't have to mind your P's and Q's so much.
Texans are a little different. Ask little, expect you to volunteer info as and when you deem them worthy of sharing, and if you don't, do not take it personally. The more you share, the more you're regarded as a friend moving towards becoming a family member. This is where I do my Asterix finger tapping to temple indicating a nutty people.
America is different, Austin is weird. Yes, it may sound like the city motto, but seriously, there aren't many places in this country with the diversity of opinionated people you find here. There are the Central Austin elitists, that live for the glory days when they could walk up and down Lamar without car traffic to impede their progress. The S.Austin Hippies that are still waiting for the return of the 60's. The N.West transplants from around the PLANET, living their fantasy lives of opulence knowing no limit and the East Austin locals wondering what all the fuss is about when the city is consistently in the top ten of most desirable places to live in America.
For all their differences, they find the time to enjoy all the area has to offer, glad they're here and hoping never having to leave.

To sum it up, you'll have a ball, become an ugly American to your friends across the pond, but proud to be where you are. But you will make the 'mistake' of raving about this place and they'll WANT to follow you and then....

There goes the neighbourhood...

Default You'd find yourself most welcomed in Austin!

A most embracing city.
IMO, schools in Austin vary widely in quality, even from one year to the next.
I think that's a major factor, for people moving in with kids, that they are attracted to the many surrounding communiites....generally less gang-related and crimes at school in the surround areas than in Austin proper.
Not to mention the lower priced housing.
And you still get to take advantage of the culture, incredible music scene, etc. in Austin.
Hubby finding a construction related job? Shouldn't be a problem with the gazillions of homes and subdivisions popping up way more than crazy!!!!
