Default Place to live near UT Austin

Hi All,

I am an international student from Japan and I'm starting my PhD program at UT Austin. I'm having hard time finding a good place to live.

I would like to live....
in a walking distance to campus
in a dormitory or somewhere I can make friends easily
in a good environment to study
within a budget under $700/month

I searched on line quite a bit but could not find anywhere good so far ):
Apartment affiliated with UT looked good, but it has already 6-12 month waiting lists. If you know anywhere good, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it!! Thank you ( :

With a budget of $700/month, walking to campus probably isn't going to be an option. I would consider one of the following:

1) Sharing a house/apartment, there are roommate ads on Craigslist where you can rent a bedroom in a house or duplex for $500 to $600 that's very close to campus

2) Look for an efficiency/one bedroom apartment further north of campus. There are lots of bus routes and university shuttles that run to UT campus from Hyde Park (just north of campus), where you may be able to find an efficiency in your price range.

To add to the suggestions already said, a coop (short for cooperative housing) might be an option. They'd probably be within your budget, they'd be within walking distance to campus, and it would be a great way to meet people from all kinds of backgrounds. However, they're not known for their cleanliness or good study environment.

There should be UT graduate housing, have you asked your adviser about this? Thanks!

A roommate and an apartment in the Far West area might work. It is on the shuttle bus route, so it is very easy to get to campus.
