British Airways will have direct flights to London starting in March 2014. Hopefully we will get more international flights. Do you see this effecting Austin significantly?

Your subject line is misleading, Austin has many nonstop domestic flights. I see a direct London route as having very little impact on Austin.

I don't know that it has a huge 'actual' impact, but psychologically, it it might. Maybe we will have an influx of brits .

Also, aren't there some direct international flights to Mexico already? Cancun, Cozumel, and maybe Puerto Vallarta?

Oh, just ready the article...first transatlantic flight....

This is a great thing, especially for Austin Tourism

LHR is a major hub, and lots of Europeans (not just Brits) fly out of there to get to the USA.

Additionally, we now don't have to fly to Dallas, or Atlanta to go overseas. Nice job British Airways!

Are we 100% sure of this? Luftansa used to have a "direct flight" from Houston to Frankfurt BUT first you had to stop in Dallas to pick up more passengers! On the way back Frankfurt-Houston, you could even deplane and hang out in a lounge behind security lines during the stop in Dallas before re-boarding to fly to Houston. There was no evidence of this stop when you purchased the ticket.

I hope that this is a true non-stop but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be only "direct" with a hidden stop to pick up extra passengers somewhere.

Yeah, I think a plane can have additional stops and still be 'direct', whereas 'non-stop' is the point A to point B and nothing else. The heading of the article is 'non-stop', so I hope they have that right and it really is.

British Airways said Tuesday it plans to begin flying nonstop between Austin and London Heathrow Airport in early March.

“We are very excited to be bringing British Airways to Austin,” said Sean Doyle, British Airways executive vice president for the Americas. “This new route presents an important opportunity for business growth across the Atlantic, particularly in the thriving technology sector.”

British Airways, American Airlines’ Oneworld partner, currently flies to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, where it picks up and leaves connecting traffic from American.

British Airways also flies nonstop between London and Houston.
So why Austin, particularly since BA’s long-haul airplanes, the Boeing 777 and 747, are really too big for that market?

The game-changer appears to be the delivery of British Airway’s Boeing 787s, a smaller wide-body airplane with excellent fuel efficiency. The 787s allow airlines to serve the long international routes that previously did not have enough traffic to support nonstop service.

According to this story in the DallasNews, the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" was the game changer for the London-Austin market.
