What is the story behind the hill of concrete that is now covered in graffiti - some of which is pretty good-? It's off 12th and Baylor? Was it going to be some development back in the day? Who owns the property? Seems like primo real estate to me...

That was a project that started in the 1980's for mixed use. I think condos. But the S&L probably killed it. I don't really know.

It is now bunch of art walls and a part of a large global outdoor art project. And some really famous people did some work in there. One in particular who if very famous for his work on the Berlin Wall who now lives in Austin, but I can't remember his name right now. =(

It is owned by Dick Clark Architecture and Castle Hill Partners. And they like and encouraged the art. Another cool thing for anyone venturing in the area... Up above the art walls is a big castle that the area gets its name from. Castle Hill. It is the oldest educational building still standing in Texas, though it has had a ton of other uses since then, and some of the original towers have burned down from a few fires in the past. It was the Texas Military Institute before TMI moved to College Station and became Texas A&M University. :yuck: [Edit: the :yuck: being for aggies not the castle. lol Hook'em Horns! ]

Wow! That old? that's awesome! Austin may not have great street art, but a little something like that is certainly cool. Its funny though... I never remembered seeing it often up until right before i moved from Austin around late 2009.

There's also that huge mural on E. 5th St on along the rail tracks. I'm not sure if its promoted or just done illegally but it's pretty cool too. I wish there was more of that around Austin.

Here's a picture I took of part of it.

A friend and I stumbled upon it awhile ago, and just for the heck of it, we got some paint and did our own stuff, making sure to avoid the real pieces of art and only go over the trashy graffiti. I haven't done much spray paint art, but I dare say I held my own. It's really cool to know the story behind it.

If you will notice the six brown and beige square panels on the center level, those were done by Shepard Fairey. Congratulations to the egocentric taggers who have defaced a beautiful piece of public art.

I noticed that too. It's not much of an art wall once it's tagged with lame grafitti

Actually, it is in some ways more 'artistic' when it is multi-layered and dynamic over time.
