austin-steve, all your post tells me is that the competition has not reached a point of desperateness in that district. But is will, just wait until these districts begin living the ESL dream. Then refer back to my post when you reach the point of “oh s&it, what do I do now.” One more thing Austin-steve, read your earlier comment about the “lower road”, “selling short’, “pursuit of principles” or some quip to that effect, and although agree with your value system, can see the point of the other posters. Now, I do not know you, and do not want to speculate your financial solvency, however, would bet safely that you could not afford a shack in southern Marin where the shacks start at $1,000,000 if you can find one. This being said, if your children were in neighboring San Rafael, more specifically, the canal district where homes begin in the low $500 - $600,000’s, I believe you would be willing to compromise those principles in a hurry. The canal district is 97% ESL learners and a has a greatschools.org rating of “2” (barely credentialed). Now I am certain were your children attending these canal schools, you would not have this conflict, as this is still pricey for most Texans, however; my point is that after your children came home from school day-in-and-day-out, being ridiculed, beaten up, hearing the teachers speak Spanish half the time and receiving a substandard/failing education – I wonder where then would be the principles which you profess to others?

What is your issue with Spanish? Puhleeze - half of the schools here are spanish 50% of the time as well - we Texans just know how to do it where you don't spend 4 hours of your day commuting to your 9 hour job to live in your $1,000,000 shack, thereby ignoring your kids, which creates all the behavior problems you're referring to. In short - the language doesn't create the problem - the inability to parent does, and the socioeconomic disparities and bungled social programs that plague that state out west only compound the issue.

To paraphrase an earlier statement:

Marin has nothing to do with Austin

Wow.

Well, no, I wouldn't compromise my principles. I'd move. Across country if needed, and raise my kids in an environment best for them. You make some astounding assumptions about others, and what you "believe" we'd do and what you are "certain" others would do in certain situations.

I grew up in California. Left when I was 19. I don't care for your politics or the entitlement society you've created, and how all of that "government down, unions first" mentality eventually infects the thinking of its inhabitants. Your comments are a perfect example.

Your cities are going bankrupt and your state is flat broke with no clear end in site. Your business environment is hostile to business owners (many of which are leaving for Texas) and your schools are among the worst public schools in the nation.

So, pardon me if I don't value your advise to Austinites about schooling, or your willingness to advise others to cheat the system.

Essentially, you are saying that the California school system has made it impossible and unaffordable for good honest parents to live lives of integrity, and that even the most principled individuals will feel compelled to abandon values and try to cheat the government system that you've created through government policy, as endorsed by voters.

Good job California. Got any more good advise for us here in Austin?

Steve

What? That we're supposed to let our environment dictate our morals?

Yeah... Everything is always "their" fault.

But, I will take your suggestion and call the school district.
Would it be a big enough apartment to legally accommodate you and the children that will be attending school.
If it is a Studio or 1 Bedroom, there might be an issue.

It is not just your name that needs to be on the lease, but the number of people who will be occupying the apartment. Some places require you list the names of everyone who will be occupying the apartment.

Steve
Very well said. It was exactly the reason that I moved from Bay Area to Austin, when my eldest was about to go to kinder.

Could I afford the best school district in Bay Area? Maybe. But I didn't want to be part of the dog race, and I didn't want my kids to do that either.
