Hi everyone,

I have my bachelor's degree in Chemical & Biological Engineering. I currently moved to Texas to look for jobs. I have been searching but no much positive results. Today, I just got an offer for temporary/contract quality engineer position at medical device & pharmaceutical company. So, basically the routine work is to provide oversight and guidance in manufacturing operations from a scientific perspective, ensuring continuous facility and GMP compliance and provide suggestion for quality improvement. In fact, quality control work(dealing with document) is not my favorite. I always want to work as either a process engineer or product development engineer.

Truly, I am in a dilemma whether I should take this? But tough job market made me to feel like I should go ahead and take the job. My question is as for an entry level position, should I go ahead and take the offer? Can this opportunity be a stepping stone for me to get to what I really want to do in my career- process engineer job / product development engineer? I am really scared that I will waste 1 year of time doing something that might not lead to a good end.

Regards,
Y. Lee

Not an expert in field but unless you can be super picky, take it, learn from it and who knows- you'll either find your dream job there or make contacts and gain knowledge about the local market to find dream job elsewhere. I know you have great degrees, but virtually no one gets their perfect job right at the bat. I don't get the waste a year. Whether you waste a year is up to you . I don't think wasting a year means anything anymore, in this market. You could however, waste a year looking for that perfect job!

Yes, temporary jobs and contract jobs can be an entry route for a full-time job. For large companies, adding contractors is much easier for a section head or team manager than hiring permanent employees. And some use it as a try-out. It's not something you can count on, because it is also much, much easier to get rid of a contract employee, but I've known a number of people who used contract work as an opportunity to get to know the right people and demonstrate their value, so they were eventually hired for jobs they wanted.

Good luck.
