Can you guys tell me what the market is like for legal assistants who work in IP, particularly patent prosecution, in the Austin area? Is it tough to get a job in this field?
Thanks,
Chris

Didn't the feds just approve an office for Dallas? Long term that seems like the place to go, but then again it's not my field.

My wife was an IP legal assistant (from california). She found that there were plenty of jobs here, but the pay was much lower than so cal. She worked for a large IP law firm in california and made 60k/year. Here she would have been lucky to make 35K. This was 10 years ago, so I dont know how things might have changed.

Dallas or East Texas would be a better bet.

Yeah, but according to Cost of Living calculators like Sperling's, $35K here has the buying power of $50K in LA, so that's a wash.

I'm a layman, so I dunno, but it does seem logical that with all the high tech firms and start-ups in Austin there would be a certain amount of IP law being done, especially with so many software patent-infringement suits being filed in East Texas, according to the news media.

There are lots of firms who do patent work, as well as the in house legal departments at dell, and, national instruments, etc. I don't think you'd have a problem here if you have valuable experience. You might join the capa- capital area paralegal association to make some contacts. The firms here do Texas and national work, so you certainly do not need to live in east Texas, although that is where many many patent suits are filed

The poster is asking about patent prosecution jobs though, not litigation. The Eastern District law firms are pretty much only there for patent litigation.

There are patent prosecution firms in just about every major city and Austin is no exception. It just won't have the same concentration as in San Jose CA or Alexandria VA. Dallas might be a better bet too because as verybadgnome mentioned the USPTO is opening a satellite office there. That will doubtlessly draw a new round of hiring for firms which expand or relocate there.

Or if you want to you might be able to get hired as an Examiner for the USPTO, which is a pretty great (if stressful) gig if you ask me.
