Don't get me wrong this is still Texas and racial stuff still goes down but I've never heard epitaths lobbed at people of Indian decent. (Hence my earlier comment) But to be fair I should also say Sixth Street isn't a good sample to base your view of the town on. Good chance you were harrassed by a drunk/high/mentally ill homeless person who could have been referring to you as a clean cut citizen and not regarding to you individually or your race.

If you live anywhere that flows into Westwood High School (whether you are looking for a good school or not, note what high school you are going to) you will not be looked at weirdly. The whole WWHS chain is extremely asian (WWHS being 40%). I live in a WWHS zoned area and majority of my street is Indian. Anything that flows into Westlake, Vandergrif, Bowie, Anderson, or McNiel will have a large portion of Indians. (So basically NorthWest, SouthWest, or West Austin). WARNING: It can be expensive, but you will find something inf your price range I am sure.

If you go to the AISD web site, you can pull up the demographics for most elementary schools to get a good idea of who lives in the area. You will find that Asians are the number three group (behind 'white' and 'hispanic'), and in reality, the 'Asian' classification could almost be called 'Indian'. Our local elementary school in SW Austin was 14% Asian in 2009-2010, and I suspect it has only increased since then. In our actual daycare, I would guess than Indian's are the second largest group after 'white'. I can't think of any issues you are likely to have, at least overtly.
