Every other major city in Texas like Dallas/Houston/SA /Ft Worth/Waco /Corpus/ seems predominantly minorities. Why is Austin different?

I don't know. I would like to know to. And to separate us further, Asians are about to pass African Americans in percentage of population by next years end. Very odd.

You mean there is going to be more Asians than AAs in Austin next year? That's nuts. This town is starting to look more like SF instead of the other cities in the state.

Why is Austin the most Anglo major city in Texas?
Because, some city, by definition, will be the lowest percentage minority....

History!

Austin was a small town for a long time! State government and the universities were dominated by Anglos and Austin historically was a majority Anglo town (prejudice is indirectly as fault -- educational and occupational discrimination kept many hispanics from legal, government, and university jobs.

Austin was a very different place in the 1940s and 1950s. The oil boom bust, the real estate boom/bust of the 80s and the tech boom of the 90s, drew lots of newcomers to Austin . . . but the demographics of the newcomers were pretty similar to the resident population.

Other towns -- ie San Antonio and Houston (not to mention Dallas) have different histories, industries, etc.

Yupp. It's probably because of Asian population is the fastest growing demographic of Austin by far, and the AA population is declining. As a person who loves to look at statistics, it is fascinating. Austin already has the largest share of Asians of any southern city. I guess it will just extend that lead?

It is (most Anglo), but not by a huge amount. Hispanics are very quickly catching up.

As far as the Asian population... it's only about .3% higher than Houston's (they are both about 6%, compared to about 3% in Dallas and 2% in San Antonio)... and considering Houston's much larger size, the large numbers of Asians in Houston are more evident (e.g. having a real Chinatown and more Asian culture, amenities, food, etc.)

Just using 2010 numbers...(city proper)

Houston's Asian population 111,270

Austin's 49,794

San Antonio 31,857

Austin's the home of: state government; the largest concentration of tech companies in the state; and the flagship campus of the largest state university. All of which tend to attract non-minority professionals from other parts of the state and country. AKA: Jobs White People Like

I think that the Austin metro will become slightly more hispanic, but not as fast as you think. The hispanic population inside the city limits is stable, and the middle class hispanic share may grow.

The poorer hispanic communities are getting priced out to the suburbs in a lot of cases.

http://www.city-data.com/city/Austin-Texas.html

Check out the color coded map - it shows pop % change for all ethnic groups in statistical areas.

The biggest areas where I saw hispanic pop decline were
*near east austin
*near NE Austin
*near south austin
*suburban SW Austin near Bart'n Creek
*suburban South Austin near SP Meadows

The areas with the biggest hispanic pop increase were

*North Austin
*East Riverside
*Suburban east austin each side of the river.
*Manor
*Hutto
