So I moved from houston to austin and was charged with the following fees:
relet fees: $50
Parking pass: $50
changing lock fees: $50

I have no problem paying the lease break amount, however don't think I should pay the 3 above amounts.
What is a relet fee? If the apt was rented within 2 weeks of me moving, can they charge me this?

Apt dwelling have to change the locks anyways everytime a tennant moves out so why would I pay this fee?

And the parking pass was a cheap piece of plastic that was cracking and faded from the sun..wasn't $50 so why would I pay that amount too?

Anyone know the legal and right things to say to avoid these fees so I as the resident have a leg to stand on?
I'll pay all the fees just to do away with them but its principal right now

Advice will be appreciated..thank you

Not much you're going to be able to do if those fees were listed in your original lease. Texas is a landlord friendly state, so you may not have a whole lot of leg to stand on here.

I'd start with these guys and see what they say:

Tenants' Council of Houston

This is the same thing you posted back on 5/3 in the Houston forum. What different answer do you think anyone in Austin will have?

I have the same answer for you now I had then... read your lease agreement. What did you agree to when you first rented the apartment? I'll bet all those fees are in there. The rekey fee, in particular, is standard. The landlord is required to rekey the lock, yes, but they're allowed to charge the tenant for it.

And if they're not in there, consult with the Houston Tenants' Council, as EZPeterson suggested.

Heh. If you agreed to it in a signed lease you are definitely obligated to pay it, so I sincerely doubt that's what HTC said at all.

If you want legal answers, talk to a lawyer. This service can arrange a low cost consultation with a lawyer for you. Public Lawyer Referral Services in Travis County | Lawyer Referral Services Org

Well, I think the legal advice you get on any internet forum is worth exactly what you pay for it.

Some costs landlords may not be allowed (by law) to pass on explicitly to the tenet; if that is the case for a re-key, then he may not need to pay it. Of course, you are getting charge for it somewhere (rent).
