Hi, we're a military couple trying to relocate to Austin. We're still relatively young (29 & 30) and don't have children yet and don't plan on having them for the next 2-3 years. We're currently stationed at Fort Hood, TX but with both of us being from a city, this small town we currently live in is a bit too quiet for us. To save everyone's time, here's basically what we're looking for.

- NO crime or shady neighborhoods
- 1-2 bedrooms okay ($750-900/mo) apt/condos preferred
- Lively environment but no constant crazy partying
- Close proximity to downtown

Since we live about an hour away from Austin, we have been trying to talk to the locals whenever we get down there but everyone seems to give mixed answers. Some say stay away from North East and others say stay away from South West. So we'd like to hear from Austinites who have the inside info of the city Oh btw, we're NOT looking to buy a home.

Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Up your rental budget if you want to be close to downtown in a decent sized apartment. Probably $1200 or so.

Id say E Austin, but it isn't known for being the safest. Up the budget a few hundred.
