Wow..this is wonderful news, right in the heart of downtown Austin, and the place will be enormous! The Austin Jewish community is the second, fastest growing in the South, besides Atlanta! Every city needs a good, authentic Jewish deli - the breads, the soups, the sandwiches - originally from upstate NY no less! Oy vey!!

From Eater Austin:
Quote:
In "mid-to-late October," downtown Austin will be on the receiving end of a great mitzvah: the opening of a 7,000 square-foot kosher deli called Mastman's, originally of Buffalo, New York.

Flying under the radar, the Mastman's website has been teasing Austin since early 2012 with posts like this: "We all can't be the chosen people, but soon in Austin, Texas we will be able to eat like them. Mastman's Deli will bring Kosher back to the heart of Texas where it belongs." The original Mastman's closed in 2005 after sixty years on Buffalo's Hertel Avenue. Here's hoping the Austin Mastman's will continue this adorable advertising tradition.
Shalom, y'all!!

yum, I hope they actually have good deli. It has been years since I've had any good deli sandwiches.

Yup. Owner Dave Rosen says they'll be open late October.

Yay! I so hope it's as good as good as I hope it will be. Lots of places bill themselves as "authentic," but end up falling short.

Is that in the Scarborough building? I'm guessing it is not the retail space at the corner of Congress/6th that the Apple Store was at for SXSW. But like next to Ruth's Chris? I can't remember what is there or not right now.

Mastman's Deli is going to be on the east side of the 1st floor of the old Texas Comptroller's Office building at W. 6th St. & Colorado St. I love that downtown gets another (hopefully) soon to be iconic, independent business, which I suspect will outshine the bland, 'upscale Friday's' chain, Bar Louie, next door at the corner.

A block west of Congress. Look at it in Google Streetview.

Ah! Thank you!

I just saw the link in your OP and it has a picture. lol. I really should click on links and read for myself, though sometimes am afraid to. lol. For some reason I thought that building was like the 190's of W Sixth Street.

For anyone else here is the image from the link:

The Scarborough Building is on the west side of Congress on 6th. It is the old building on the same block as Mastman's is going but on the left (east) side of the block in the picture. Not the building Mastman's is going in, nor the little old one next to it, but the one next to that with the fire escapes on it. Right in front of the Bank of America building.
