Oh I have the best place!

Malaga! Malaga Tapas and Bar

The Austin restaurant guide gives it a 8.4 for food, and 8.8 for experience (out of 10). It's in the Warehouse District and they say "Trendy tapas and interesting wine flights in a trendy location."

Now, my husband and I have gone here on a date - and it was really great, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Not overly trendy, a good mix of ages and "types" of people. You didn't have to feel like you should be dressed up as it was a good mix of casual, people out on the town and people getting off work, etc.

We had some wine, and a few plates of tapas w/ dessert and it was pretty decent priced as well.

Are you referencing The Fearless Critic?
That is an excellent resource.

Yes, that's the one. We are big foodies, so we purchased it when we moved here.

I second Mesa Ranch. Mirabelle across the street is worth investigating too. In Round Rock the Main Street Grill has good food and nice ambiance. I've heard that the SaltLick 360 has more ambiance and is more upscale than the original, but I haven't eaten there.

I recommend Eddie V's as well. I liked the food at the Arboretum location better, but the one downtown is probably a bit quieter. The one at the Arboretum has an awesome happy hour Tuesday through Saturday night til 7 or 7:30 - all their appetizers are half off and the wine list is very good. The appetizers are the good ones, too - broiled oysters, mushroom and goat cheese salad, tuna tartare...yum.

I was totally underwhelmed by Salt Lick 360. $15 BBQ entrees for food that is, to me, not as good as Rudy's BBQ.

The restaurant portion of the Belmont was pretty good and very quiet. You might also try Starlite Restaurant. It's a bit pricey with shi-shi portions, but the food is outstanding and it is pretty quiet restaurant. I also like Malaga for tapas and sangria.

Must go eat now

This may sound crazy but I recommend (HIGHLY) Bordeaux in Kyle....Most restuarants in Austin are so loud...Bordeaux has a great menu, great wine list and best of all it's really condusive to conversation.

Roaring Fork is a great place for some nice wine and conversation. Not too mention if you go between 5-7 pm you get Happy Hour Prices on some food- and the food is outstanding. The waitstaff is the best in town (IMO). With all of the GREAT suggestions you can't go wrong!!

Bistro88 is great. It's on Bee Cave near Mopac. Nice wine list, excellent award winning cuisine. Also, I know it's a chain, but the Ruth's Chris here downtown is the best one I've ever been to. I also third Mesa Ranch.

Default You guys ROCK!!!

Wow! Y'all have totally exceeded my expectations! I knew you would be a good source of info, but I am totally overwhelmed!

In reviewing your suggestions, I see I have lots to pick from. Mom mentioned a wonderful meal she had at Green Pastures (a couple of times) so that might be a good place for her birthday celebration. Of course, we also love Tapas, and we live SW, so a restaurant in Kyle has a distinct appeal as well.

Thank you for all your suggestions! I think I will explore the others on date night with my husband!

Cheers!

I do not live in Austin . . . . yet . . . . (I will on November 3rd!!!), so I don't know how this place is thought of by the locals, but my husband and I (who are kind of big foodies) and my sister's fiance (who is a chef), really enjoyed the wine, cocktails and appetizers at Shoreline Grill next to the Four Seasons. They have an AMAZING apple martini (not from a mix), and their crab cake and fried oyster appetizer plates have been delicious both times we have gone. Actually we have really enjoyed everything we have ever eaten there EXCEPT for their desserts. They were terrible. I had creme brule the consistency of heavy cream. It was a nightmare. But that is ok. I didn't really go there for dessert anyway.
