I am wondering if anyone has any information on the San Marcos area. My husband and I are researching the area and would love some input. Has anyone raised kids in this area? How are schools, house prices and the general feel of the town. We have lived in the desert for years and would love to get a house by the river but it doesn't look like there is a river near? I keep hearing about the San Marcos River but it does not seem like there is real estate on it.

I like the Wimberley area as well but it seems there may be more schooling options in San Marcos. Any information on Wimberley would be great also.

Thank you!

San Marcos is not all that great in the way of schools because the town is primarily composed of hippies and service employees for Texas State. I would guess that the professors with kids probably commute from South Austin. Wimberley seems like a somewhat affluent community full of people that move there for the Hill Country scenery.

I went to college there. I love San Marcos. A really cute town with a lot to do for its size.

However, I will agree that the schools are pretty bad.

The schools aren't great. Very low income and a large portion are English as a second language. Most professors live in other districts or send their kids to SM Academy which is supposedly really good. Right now, I know 3 professors with kids and 2 live in Shady Hollow and 1 in Onion Creek (both in Austin). Of the dozens of San Martians I've known throughout the years, the vast majority have all sent their kids to private school or faked their way into a neighboring school district.

San Marcos is a great place to be single or kidless. It's a very slacker oriented town. I should know. I lived there for 5 years after college and did just that. It's a great place to be in a band, tend bar, dabble in a small part time business, kayak, go fishing, or hang out at a patio bar at happy hour.

In other words, it's like Austin was 25 years ago? Sounds like I might need to move.
