Just got my 2013 property tax bill and it's almost $1300 higher than last year. Big Government is alive and well in Austin and Travis County.

And they have the audacity to keep asking the voters to raise taxes even more. If a lot of voters get their tax bill before the election next week I would expect the new hospital tax to go down in flames.

Tax values went out in May, so why would receiving your tax bill be a shock?

I don't recall the total tax calculation going out in May. Tax values are not tax bills. Tax rates have increased.

Are you a non-escrow payer? Otherwise I don't get the timing of this comment.

The tax appraisal went out in May, and the tax rate was included on the TRAVISCAD web site, so not sure what would have changed since then. The tax bill you get this time of year will reflect that rate and that value.

I don't think many people equate their new values and rates in May to an actual dollar amount. Only when they get the bill do they realize what they're on the hook for.

Maybe, but generally speaking, the change in taxes is almost entirely due to change in appraised value, so if your appraised value goes up 5%, you taxes go up about 5%. Also, if you have a homestead exemption, the max your effective appraised value can go up is 10%, so the OP would have had to have an old tax bill of about 13K, give or take.

Looking back at my 2011 vs 2012 tax rate (inside COA, Travis county) I am about 1% difference.

This is true and you may dispute by a certain time. However, like GreenPlastic writes.......the reality of it hits with the bill.

Well, I reckon this is our last year in 'four figure' territory. We were pennies shy of $10K on ours.
