Hi there,

I'm a lesbian in a committed relationship and I've been trying to find information on changing my last name to that of my partner's. Do I need a lawyer? Will I be refused?

I think where you will run into trouble is with your SSN and anything associated with your SSN. When I went to change mine after getting married, they required a certified copy of the marriage certificate. I'm sure you could do it with a lawyer though - from what I understand, you can change it to anything you want as long as it's not to avoid obligations or legal action.
