It's still very much a small town, like what I remember living in during high school in the 1970s when I lived in a town of 5,000. Worth the detour just for the nostalgia and reminder of what smaller simpler living use to be like. Ain't no downtown highrise condos, that's for sure.

We didn't stop but next time I'll try Weikel's as recommended by Hoffdano.

For our Grasshopper, who may not know the history. I'm sure there is more to the history of the area then this, but we always enjoy speculating about the Chicken Ranch when passing through LaGrange. Chicken Ranch (Texas) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks! That was fun to review. Actually, I did know about the Chicken Ranch. I left Texas when I graduated in 1974, but I actually remember Marvin Zindler doing the piece on the Ranch in 1973, and I knew at the time that it had been shut down. My parents lived in Huntsville at the time, and listened to the Houston news. I can still remember MAAARRRRRRRRvin Zindler. I didn't know very much history, but I knew it was there. Not much to see now, I guess.

Hey OP, how about an update?

How was the traffic to the airport?
How were the lines at the airport?
what did you end up doing?

We ended up leaving on Tuesday afternoon for Houston, and went the usual 291/71/10 route. There was a little traffic around the airport, but not bad. (I can't report on how the lines were in the airport.) We got to Houston in about 3.5 hours. It was infinitely better than last year, when we went on Wednesday afternoon, and it took 6 hours, in bumper to bumper traffic the whole way. The extra night in a motel was worth it.

On the way back on Friday, we took I10 all the way to 80, north to San Marcos, north on I35, and home via Slaughter. We liked that route. There was very little traffic on 80. Maybe we will go that route next year and skip the airport traffic altogether.

Also, this year I have a new car (Prius). So we got much better mileage and were much more comfortable. I would call it a successful trip.
