Default Property Taxes

Whoever wrote this article, got it wrong. They obviously didn't do their research on Austin. 7200 for a 300,000 house here, 7200 for a 450000 house in New York or New Jersey. I'd say we have it way worse. What's up with this?

In NJ a home that cost 400k has property taxes anywhere from 10k - 12k a year. My home was purchased for 300k and property taxes at 10k. Now its valued at 550k and property taxes at 14k. My neighbors across the street have homes valued at 380k and taxed at 13k and my other one at 280 taxes at 10k but the smallest lot you can fit around the house. Anything of value 1/2 an acre which is rare, but .25 acres you can expect taxes at 12k and higher.

I looked at a house in Highpointe out near dripping Springs and it was $479 and the takes were over 14K. How can that not be considered some of the highest in the nation. Granted, it was a huge house (5200 sf), but still!

Taxes PER CAPITA are higher else where but on average taxes ON APPRAISED VALUE have been highest in Texas in recent years (there are a few individual counties in the Northeast that are worse). After living and investing in Texas most of my life the heat and taxes (and some politics) got to me and I am in the process of getting fully extricated.

I say they are nuts.

My home was valued at $167,650 in 2006 and my tax was $3829.59. I see they have it valued at $191,180 this year but have the taxable value at $184,415. last year the value and taxable amount were the same. I believe my tax statement for this year was just over $4000..I don't have it handy to look.

Default Dripping Spring Master Planned Taxes

Someone posted about the high taxes in Dripping. The taxes are higher for the master planned communities. If you are outside of Belterra or HighPointe, taxes are generally 2.22%.

Exactly what we are doing also. We have had it with state government, taxes and humidity.

The article says the median taxes are the highest. The median property value in austin is 162K so the median tax value is probably around 4800.

They cite the reasons such as high property values as causing the high median taxes. Does it cost a city government more to service higher value homes? Possibly..

Folks, you have to compare apples to apples. A $400,000 house in Austin will cost better than twice that in the NY/NJ area and the property taxes there will be about $15000-$20000. Also, Texas has no personal income tax so the gov't has to get their money somehow.
