Greetings all,

My Fiancé and I are planning a visit to Austin next month (middle of november) to see if it's somewhere we'd want to move this summer.
All we have read and all the help from this forum have given us reason enough to visit for a week.

This trip will be partially business partially pleasure, as we will be getting a vibe for the place as well as locating areas on a possible move. South Austin seems wonderful but could anyone give more specific areas to visit? (neighborhoods, communities, shops, clubs, etc. ??)

facts sometimes help so: I'm a graphic artist, she's in hospitality. We like experimental-electronic, strange music, art, we are music makers, don't really drink, but good wines are fine, good cheese, good people, we're fairly laid back, we like intelligent conversations, social situations that don't revolve around a bar. hope that helps. .

I should also add we are fairly in the middle when it comes to income. A small 2bd house would suite us fine. . I imagine (going by what we make now) $500-$700/month sounds about right for rent.

thanks!

I don't think you will be able to find a house to rent for that amount in the city limits. I'd try the outskirts such as Pflugerville, Kyle or Hutto.

That will be a tough rent for a house. I believe that rentals are generally in the $0.90 to $1 per sq. ft range, although that will obviously vary by neighborhood. Anyway, $700/month will possible get you a 800 sq ft house...which there just aren't many of.

Believe it or not, $700-$800 won't get much if anything in Hutto. Most of the stuff here goes for at cheapest mid 900's on up to abt. 1500.

I'd be shocked if any of those places have houses that cheap for rent. Maybe a doublewide.

The only places I've seen rent that low for a house were in Taylor, Thrall, Granger, or Elgin. And those would be quite a ways from Austin. An apartment or condo, maybe?

we are open to an apartment.
We just got a map of austin and are beginning to learn where things are.
We understand a big factor of finding a home will be job location.
We don't want to drive more than a hour to werk.. im in luxury now with my 5 minute commute.

So I guess I should be asking:
What are the affordable yet decent areas in the south Austin area?
Afforable being 500-800/month decent being, a clean neighborhood, things to do (music/art, nice people) towns for 25-35 yr. olds with no kids and appetite for activity.

we want to get a list of areas or neighborhoods to check out while we visit.

thank you!

It will be almost impossible to find something in your price range in South Austin. I think you really need to consider an apartment. You won't find any decent rentals for that price range. Austin is quite expensive in comparison to other parts of texas. You should up your budget to 1200+ for a house.
