Hey guys - still relatively new to town, finally picked up a shotgun and need to get out and practice with it a bit. I'd rather not go to a range and shoot slugs, I'm hoping someone here knows of an open area (or 5) where I can park and shoot.

When I lived in CA, we'd go 20 minutes into the hills and shoot into a big hillside. Something like that would be great.

I'm in Oak Hill - the closer to that, the better. Thanks in advance!

Your gonna have to do the slug thing unless you know someone with property your out of luck. Why not go to the range and shoot slugs? It will improve aim over scatter gun shot.

Just remember that you can't just go on someone's land and shoot without their permission, and that there are regulations on parkland that you'll need to follow lest you get in big trouble. I'd suggest going to Red's Shooting Range in Oak Hill and asking them. If there's a place, chances are good that they, or one of their customers, will know it.

Thanks for the replies guys - eventually I'm hoping to make a friend with someone that has some property I can just got shoot through a box or two of ammo without talking to anyone, spending any money (beyond money for ammo, etc)..like I had in CA.

Am hoping someone will pop up in here and volunteer a spot or two where people do this locally. In the meantime, thanks again for the replies, I'll head over to Red's to do some shooting and ask around.

I would recommend the Lone Star Gun Range in Lockhart before going to Red's. The building has no ventilation and I've seen some pretty dumb range activities. At Lone Star they have great range masters and its outdoors.

The idea was not to go shooting at Red's, but to ask about facilities like the OP is looking for. The OP is in Oak Hill, and thus Red's is a lot closer for asking questions. If they don't know, THEN a trek to Lockhart might be in order.

Hard to imagine the lack of ventilation. At Red's in Pf-ville, you know exactly what the outside temp is by the air hitting the back of your neck @ 30mph. I have no idea what the air exchange rate is there, but it is FAST! Certain lanes are better/worse than others, if you have an aversion to 'wind' blowing on you while shooting.
