My husband and I are considering a move to Austin. We are trying to narrow down our home search. Two areas/neighborhoods stand out for us as far as square footage and price, Buttercup Creek and Paloma lake. Anyone out there live in one of these areas that can give me their take on Schools (elementary), shopping, amenities etc... Any info would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're looking to build a new home (Ashton Woods?) Otherwise, I can't imagine why you would just throw out those two neighborhoods that are fairly far apart from each other.

My short answer is that I would go with the new area of Buttercup Creek before Paloma Lake. It has better access to a new HEB Plus (grocery store), Lakeline Mall, feeds into a better High School, etc. Paloma Lake is closer to the Outlet Mall and isn't bad either. It might be better if you worked for Dell. However, there are a lot of other options as well. Do you know where you'll be working yet?

Agree with mark311...The commute could be a deciding factor. While Paloma Lake has good access to Old Settlers' Park(plenty of ball fields and a small tennis 'center'), the area around Buttercup Creek has quite a few 'pocket parks' with playground equipment and a couple of tennis courts here and there.

If you look at a map, Paloma Lake is kinda-sorta 'on the edge' of development...with the toll road cutting through acres and acres of farmland. Buttercup Creek's "toll road" is surrounded by residential and commercial development...quite a difference in 'feel', I reckon.

It's not far on the map, but Buttercup Creek is on the edge of the 'hill country' while Paloma Lake's surrounding area is flat, open land(great for bicycling IF you like the wind!).
