I love Austin but I rent and am on a fixed income. Right now I am paying over $900 a month. I expect to be paying over $1000 in a year's time.

I could save on rent by downsizing to some 400 sq ft apt but I'd rather not.

As much as I love it here, it has become too expensive since I retired. (My rent 4 years ago when I retired was $675 for a bigger place than I have now.)

I'm going to have to leave Austin.

I'd still like to live nearby however, so I can at least drive to enjoy all that Austin offers.

What small towns near Austin that have reasonable housing costs but are still near enough to Austin for shopping and events?

What kind of rental are you looking for?

I'd say go west if commute isn't an issue - either that or south into NB/SA area.

Smaller towns can also have fewer rental units available which can translate into high rents! It can be unpredictable.

Going south to NB/SA is a good idea.

As EzPeterson said, what kind of rental do you want? House? Apartment? Condo?

He didn't say what $900 was getting him. It could be a 1 bedroom apartment.

Just looking for about 800 ft, good storage space, and some privacy. Don't care if it is a condo or apt or house. I don't care about apartment amenities like pools and workout rooms. I don't think I'll find a house for under $900.

$1000 for a 2 bedroom will be rarity in Austin, too.

90 rental properties are listed on the MLS that match your criteria. Georgetown seems to have quite a few, and there's a couple of condos in Lago Vista that looked pretty sweet for the price.

Go to austinhomesearch.com and search rentals.
