I've had a lot of luck running a soaker hose around the lawn and using that instead of a sprinkler.

I'll agree with reducing the amount of grass as long as the pup is happy . We were going to eliminate a fair amount of the lawn in our back yard last year, concentrating on the area hardest hit by the drought/heat/sun. Wouldn't you know it...we had the early rains last year and the 'endangered' area held up quite well. I still have a plan to eliminate a fair bit; but the swap doesn't come for free . We'll see how rambunctious I get this year Making it easier to mow is another goal(planning the edges, areas around trees, next to the fencing, etc).

If we were starting fresh in the back yard, I'd likely eliminate about half of the (current) grassy areas. I'm glad the DG here in Texas has a bit of color. The gray equivalent back in Georgia was great for buildings and curbs...not so much for yards.
