Hi all. We've been looking for a condo for my SO's nephew. He is working at the airport and is in his early 20s. He's not looking for a party/student scene, just a convenient daily trip to the airport. His dad was looking at 78741 but it's not looking too good to us. He needs a 1 or 2 bed/ 1 or two bath in a SAFE development. They are looking to spend up to $130,000. Tough, I know! My suggestion is to spend more and go west of 35, but I think they're stuck on the close to the airport/cheapest way possible route. We're in Dallas and not too familiar with the Austin area. Thanks!

The Soco area is just 8-10 minutes from the airport but you won't find anything in that price range, maybe something small at the Bel-Air? Modern condo development just south of Ben White/71 on S. Congress. Will probably run higher than $130K but you can buy for under $200K.

Why doesn't he just rent?

He is now, I think his dad is hoping for an investment and isn't grasping the high prices in Austin. They found a pretty nice condo (foreclosure) in 78741 but he made a lowball offer and lost it.

He should be able to find more in 78741, very close to the airport, not super-duper safe but Austin is safe overall. There is always demand for those condo as student rentals -- so they are relatively cheap but you won't find any "steals."

There's a new modern condo/multi family community called Edgewick at Oltorf and I-35. The community itself is great, the surrounding area not so much. 1/1 800 sqft units start at 160k.

So you would suggest 78741 as OK? I've been googling all day and get mixed messages about that zip.

What about any suburbs that would be a quick trip to the airport?

You don't want to banish a guy in his early 20s to the suburbs. And you never want to own a condo in a suburb.

Look harder at the East 6th area or SoCo. Older one bedrooms can be found in that price range.

You can get small one bedroom condos in Allandale for under $120k. They are apartment conversions to condos and are a horrible investment, but not a bad place to live if you can handle the thin walls. It's a safe area that is fairly walkable as well.

I know, I know. That is something I would never suggest for most youngsters, not even in my own town, but this kid is different. No matter where he is employed he mostly makes friends with co-workers and is so far from being part of any kind of "scene"...not into clubs...basically works and goes home, maybe a quick dinner with co-workers. He is gullible so mostly concerned with safety. Will check these areas thatnk you.
