Austin ranked much lower than I thought, behind philly and slightly above pittsburgh.

This must include biotech but didnt think austin was this far behind the other cities...

Actually #s 5-10 are pretty close overall, Austin isn't very far behind or anything. Only 29 companies separate Austin(#9) from Washington DC (#5). Could see that shuffling each year.

The top 5 make loads of sense, though, and I wouldn't expect Austin to be in that range just due to size. It is by far the smallest metro in that list.

that's a good point. However, I dont think metro size is that correlated to the # of startups given the fact that dallas, houston, chicago and atlanta are not on the top 10 list.

My point is that Austin sells itself as the "Silicon Hills" - I would think they far outstripped places like DC and Philadelphia regardless of metro size.

What defines a "tech startup"? I work for a major startup in which most people think originated in Austin because the engineering team is here. Our headquarters is actually in NY where the accounting and finance teams are located. So on paper, NY would get the count.

These types of lists/studies can be interpreted in many different ways.

I thought the same thing about "start up". However I would assume the definition of "start up" is consistent across all the cities and the location is just where the company is incorporated/registered and where the senior management team lives. If the start up hit it big, it would the area which reaps the majority of the tax benefits, like Menlo Park and Facebook.
