There are about 80 total rental units available in Austin - if you believe the internet.

GoSection8.com - Section 8 Rental Housing & Apartments Listing Service for Landlords & Tenants

Austin has the highest housing prices in TX, and very little low-income availability.

A few years back I heard the waiting list was roughly 1-2 YEARS long. I can't imagine it's gotten any better.

This says the waitlist is not open for anyone new: Wait Lists | Housing Authority of the City of Austin

Calling the city would probably be more accurate, but I think it's safe to say that section 8 is not an option for someone moving into Austin.

@chocolate4724, good info from previous posters.

I've had the recent experience of trying to assist someone looking for low income housing in Austin and her frustration became mine. As already said, the wait lists for many/(all?) places she could find were already packed and looking through Craigslist and other sources for options just increased the frustration and stress. Her current housing is coming to a sudden end in a month.

My eyes were opened to an absolute crisis in this sector of Austin's housing market right now. The woman I speak of is a long time Austin resident and recently secured gainful employment. There are *many* like her. I feel compelled to tell you -- IF possible -- you might want to rethink that move to Austin. At the very least, please continue your education on the market conditions here and come with a clear eyed view of the challenges.

Good luck.
