Anyone notice the three separate hit and runs in Austin over the last weekend? It seems like it isn't safe outside of a car anymore.

Yeah, there has been a rash of these. State legislature is looking at increasing the penalty for Failure to Stop and Render Aid. At present, it's a 3rd degree Felony, which seems tough, but it's the lightest Felony.

I wonder what other states have it set at.

I've definitely noticed an uptick, too.

I used to walk everywhere around my neighborhood -- same area where Courtney Griffin was killed -- and even walked to the bus stop early in the morning, when it's still dark. Now I don't anymore. This case really affected me more than I thought it would. I know it's highly unlikely that lightening will strike twice in the same place, but I keep thinking that it could have been me ...

AND she has to write a letter of apology to the parents for killing her daughter. That sounds pretty "grade school" if you ask me. And what a slap in the face to the parents for having that letter being done for them.

Being required to write the letter, defeats the purpose of such a letter.
I know that when I got a letter apologizing for a crime, committed against me, by a teenager; it would have meant more if the kid had not been ordered (by the court) to write the letter.

If they do not also require one to stop, even if they are not sure they hit a human (but in any case where they have hit anything, to absolutely verify that they have not hit a human), increasing the penalty is not going to do much good.
If there is the loophole, of just not knowing what one hit, I suspect that there will not be much (if any) decrease in hit and runs.
