Is this a good rate? Does it cost more to live in Austin compared to San Antonio??

Not "a lot more". The overall cost of living indexes are pretty similar between the two.

I'm just trying to weight out my difference on the offer that was presented to me. Because I just got hired after 2 years contracting. And now this comes up. But this is a long term contract also. But of course there is no security with IT contracting....

IT admin is pretty general and it's hard to say if that's a good rate. 55 x 1920 = 105600, so it's approximately equivalent to a 100k/yr salary. For some IT specialties that is good, others not so good. In Austin you could probably get by on that depending on your lifestyle.

the rent we pay here in SA for a 3bed is $1050. researching online a bed in austin 78751 zip code results back with $1700 for a 2 bed house to rent.

lifestyle - we don't go out much but we have a 20 month old daughter. its $55/hr long term with benefits.

it also depends on location, but I'm sure Austin will cost more than SA. I work in IT in NW Austin, when we first moved here we rented a new 4 bedroom house for $1600/mo in Cedar Park. I had a 10 - 15 minute commute and it was a nice enough neighborhood for us to learn the area and find a permanent place. You can find cheaper rent if you look outside of Austin.

Egads, you can definitely live very nicely in Austin on 55/hr! This is Austin, not New York City! Also 78751 I believe is Hyde Park, which is a VERY expensive area, so of course you're going to pay at a premium..but even 1700 isn't alot when you're making that much.
