Hello all, I just moved to Austin from Temecula, can. Spring is always bad for my allergies, but Austin spring is killing me. Any suggestions for a natural treatment? I just bought some raw local Austin honey today. Thanks

Local honey is tasty and will sweeten your tea.

It wont do anything for your allergies.

Some people do shots and that can help.

Some people try the more potent allergens and that can help.

Some people move out during certain times of the year (e.g. cedar season) and that can help.

My wife suffers terribly - I'm lucky and don't seem to be afflicted (knock on wood) yet.

This spring has been the worst for allergies that I have had on Austin for a many years.

I have been getting allergy shots for years and they have helped considerably.

The most effective natural treatment is this: Irrigation of your sinuses twice a day with a hypertonic saline solution (salt water & baking soda). This can help a lot to relive congestion and remove allergens from your sinuses. Get the recipe for the solution here: Central Texas Allergy & Asthma Center - Allergist, Austin, Texas - Patient Education You can get an inexpensive "neti pot" from Walgreens, which comes with a bunch of packets of the saline mix, mix with distilled water, not tap water. Other people prefer using the nasal bulb or various bottles made for the same purpose.

Arm & Hammer has come out with its own prepackaged hypertonic nasal solution, but I'm sure you pay a premium for the prepackaged distilled water with sea salt and baking soda mixed in. http://www.armandhammer.com/personal...FSunPAodJ2AAeQ I mix my own a quart at a time at home.

Walgreens Wal-Dryl works great for me as an antihistamine (to control drainage) but most antihistamines will make people groggy, so I try to use them only at bed time. Claritan-D works great as a decongestant with mild antihistamine (does not make me groggy). If you do not control your congestion you will probably get a sinus infection, like a cold, which is worse then the normal allergy symptoms.

Taking a shower, staying inside, using natural "tear" dops, and a saline nose spray all help me. Of course I have to do all this and take un-natural treatments such as Flonase, Claritin, and Patanol too.

One thing that has helped me significantly is to drink a very large all fruit smoothie daily. (8 kinds of fruits including strawberries, blueberries, blackberry, raspberry, apple, pineapple, banana, and little citrus (orange, or lime) slice) This sounds crazy but my mom has had allergies for over 20 years and doing this helped her allergies to go away and she doesn't need any medications anymore. I still have to take medication, but my allergies are way better this year than the 2 springs before this (when we first moved here). Perhaps you can give it a try. Hope you feel better!

A freind use to suffer badly in spring whe we went huntig in the hill coutry for turkeys. He went to a spcialist in Houston and he would go for a shot before spring which pretty much solved his problem. Don't know the anme but it was a evry highly regarded allgies clinic i Houston. It was mostly the Cedors bloomigthat gave him probelms. Tried the local honey but f din't help him but have heard othr ers claimed it helped;so who knows.

I have been getting shots for a few years, and the last time I went I had a bad reaction (lightheaded, hot flash, nausea, and very close to passing out). I was swiftly moved to the floor, given a shot of adrenaline and some oxygen. After an hour of oxygen and lying flat, I was fine and went home. Unfortunately that was the deal breaker for me. Please understand, this is not typical and rarely happens. I was on maintenance doses (the strongest allergen per shot). That is also the reason why the allergy doc/office asks you to stay 30-60 minutes after your shot: they check the shot site (usually the fatty area on the back of your arm) and ensure you can breathe and don't have anaphylaxis.

I have used a complex called QBC Plex with some success. It is recommended to start before you are affected by allergens. It has quercetin, bromelain and vitamin c. Along with a neti pot and using the recommended amount of salt and warm water twice to three times a day I have much relief.

Everyone is different. Do your research, contact a nutritionist (many chiropractors have one on staff, or may be one themselves) or herbalist. I work for a chiropractor/nutritionist right now and also study herbs independently. Good luck.

What are some symptoms you guys have w the allergies? I feel I experienced some when I was there for 5 days for sxsw. I don't remember having it as bad before but my face got very itchy and was red. As soon as I went back home, everything cleared up pretty good.
