I have been reading through the recent comments on this thread and I have a couple of questions, if you don't mind....

We just found out we are moving to austin very soon, before school starts. I have a (starting this fall) second grader and and a preschooler. My second grade son, has tested gifted. Not ultra gifted, just gifted. He thrives on structure and being challenged. When he gets bored, he gets himself into trouble!

We have had him in a private school setting from preschool thru 1st and have been extremely happy. I am concerned that moving him to school that is totally different will upset him and disrupt what he has been able to accomplish thus far, so I have been looking specifically at St. Andrew's and Regents. Frankly, if my husband's company wasn't sold, I would never had agreed to move and change schools.

I understand that the public schools are fantastic in Austin and feel like I NEED to consider them as a real possibility. I am just wondering if you could speak to the curriculum for a moment. Currently, he has been taking the traditional classes...math, science, reading, language arts, social studies, art and physical education. Additionally, he has taken 2 years of french and 1 of spanish, computers and technology, character education, and music. Are these "extra" classes being offered in the public school for 2nd grade?

Can anyone talk about preschools? My younger son isn't as academic as his brother. He was a preemie and had some delays in speech. He doesn't have any diagnosed delays or development issues, although personally, I think he should be further along but won't push him to meet his brother's bar. He also thrives on structure, routine and being challenged (just not too challenged). He finished a private preschool 2's program this spring, 2 days a week for 4 hours a day. He has made great strides, especially verbally. what are some great preschools in the area? I would prefer to stay away from Montessori, while I think it is a great philosophy, I just don't think it the right fit for my boys.

And, I know the first question will be,"well, where do you intend to live"....I have no idea yet! I am coming down this weekend to meet with a relocation specialist who will help me learn about the neighborhoods. The company did recommend we try to look in westlake, rollingwood, barton creek areas. The office is in the rollingwood area.

I truly appreciate any information or insight that can be provided!!! I am a bundle of nerves and can't actually believe we are about to do this so quickly!!!

I do not believe that you will find a private or public school that offers French for 2nd grade! (outside of the very small, french immersion private schools)

SAS is unlikely to have space for this fall, admissions are in Feb-March. Regents is very very Christian. You can probably find what you want in EISD, they should have specific curriculum info on their website.

You might want to start a new thread!

Good post & I agree, start a new thread (you can copy & paste).

When you do post again, share what your budget is (for rent or purchase). The greater "rollingwood" area is great, with good schools, but can be pricey for some folks. Keep in mind that property tax would be 2.0 - 2.4% per year.
