As rumors go, this one's fairly solid.

According to an Engadget tipster, a post titled "Google Fiber's Next Stop: Austin, Texas" briefly appeared on the "Cities" section of the Fiber website. It's no longer there, but there is a screenshot posted at Engadget.
C-D's rules won't let me excerpt more, but that's the most salient reason to expect an announcement is coming.

Yeah with that last bit of evidence it went from powerful rumor to factual leak.

It appears it's all but confirmed. Google, you better not messing with Texas!!

Reading Google Fiber blog gives us some insight on what we can expect as far as timeline.

* March 30, 2011, Kansas City, Kansas was chosen as the first city to get Google Fiber.
* Feb 06, 2012, Google had studied maps and surveyed neighborhoods
* April 04, 2012, Google hung over 100 miles of fiber
* July 26, 2012, Google opened pre-registration
* August 08, 2012, Google Fiber team members are spread across Mountain View, Austin and Kansas City.
* Sept 9, 2012, pre-registration closed, 180 fiberhoods qualified for the service.
* Nov 13, 2012, officially started to connect homes in Kansas City to Google Fiber

I am sure Google has a lot of lessons learned from Kansas City roll out that could only benefit us.
We are probably looking at early 2014 before the first home in Austin is connected to Google Fiber.

The OP posted an article with a headline that said Austin COULD get Google Fiber, and listed a couple of other things the announcement could be about... but put his own headline on it saying "Google Fiber coming to Austin," and then every poster after that interacted with the story with great fervor as if it were a fact.

And that's how rumors spread. In this case the rumor may turn out to be true... we'll all find out for sure Tuesday at 11AM CT when the press conference is actually held... but at this point it's still only a rumor.

Uh, it's clearly happening and not "just a rumor". And BTW - you said, and I quote, "runaway rumor", implying there was nothing substantive behind it.

There is - there are news stories and blog posts, there was a web page that confirmed it, and there is chatter by people in the know.

This is not mere speculation. This is a happening thing.

I count 20 months between announcement and first service. That would be December 2014, if the announcement is next week.

, I realized that. I am sure different city has different challenges. I am hoping that it will take Google lesser time to roll it out to Austin, we'll see.

Maybe they'll have HBO/AMC by then and it will be worth switching.

Until then, no.

Well, I saw it posted (probably by accident since it's not there) on the official Google Fiber website too. I doubt it's a rumor now.

Does anyone know the criteria for a neighborhood to "qualify"? Is it a percentage of homes or total homes?
I'd print flyers and walk door to door to sign up my neighbors.

The other question that popped into my head was "would a home buyer use the availability of Google Fiber as a decision point in selecting where to live in Austin? I could see it happening, and as more than just a tie breaker, especially for the growing percentage of high tech work-at-homes.

Steve
