I know that people have been lining up at the Academy stores around town a few hours before they open in order to get the little ammunition that is available. Some of those people have then been selling whatever they buy at 5 to 6 times what they paid for it or more. If you call and talk to a manager at your local Academy, they should be able to tell you the shipping schedule so you can show up early one morning. The only reason that I even know this is because I have a relative in Georgetown that has been trying to buy ammo for a .22 and keeps getting turned away everywhere over the past few weeks.

Academy keeps the scarce ammo up at the customer service desk when they get it.

Pretty much the Wally World and Academy routes are viable but are being overrun daily. So, playing the game is an exercise in frustration BUT may pay off in a small way.(Both chains have per day/per customer limits on ammo). It doesn't sound like something I want to get involved in and fortunately I have a decent stock of 9mm and 22lr for practice(might even hit Red's North today for some range time). I've personally sold over 2000 rounds of both calibers to folks for a reasonable price since I truly believe the 'crisis' will be over before I run out.

There has been some minor success with Cabela's on-line according to Texas Gun Talk and SlickDeals. Catching either 9mm or 22lr in stock is a guessing game with them, since their web site can run a little behind actual inventory changes.

Of course, there are anecdotal accounts of 'families' swarming the big box stores early each morning in order to re-sell the ammo on-line or at gun shows.

Academy will sell you 1 box per caliber, limit of 3 total, per day (you could probably repeat buy - except they would be sold out). You need to show up about 7:45 a.m. on the days they re-stock, which is different per store. At least their prices are reasonable. ($12.99/50 of 9mm FMJ).

I have been to Walmarts for other reasons, and I have never seen anything in stock for the popular calibers.

For those of you who dont mind the quick drive to Waco, there is a great locally owned store up there that does a good job keeping ammo stocked. I cant confirm if they have 9mm in stock but last time I was up there they had a good supply of .223, .308, and a lot of .22lr. They also do membership gun cleaning which comes out to like $15 for an ultrasonic, complete breakdown cleaning. Its called The Gun Cleaners of Waco on Valley Mills Dr in Waco. ~90 miles (hour and a half) from downtown Austin.

Various Academy's get shipments in daily (no single one gets ammo every day but between them all they usually have shipments every day of the work week). Trick is to get there before 9am (they open at 8am). If you get there at 8am, you have a good chance (though not guaranteed depending on the length of the line and the amount they got in). 9am is cutting it close, but doable esp with certain Academy locations (e.g. RR/I35). Get there before 7am and you will have a shot at getting some of the bulk boxes, def a good thing. Call ahead to check before you go, they're good at letting you know what they got.

Walmart tends to be way more miss than hit, though if you do get lucky you can buy 3 boxes of a single calibre if you want vs Academy which limits you to one box per calibre.

Don't forget Cabela's if you live down that way.

Several local shops, but I can't vouch for their pricing (good thing about the big box guys is that they've been real good at keeping the ammo prices very reasonable).

Avoid Dicks, they rarely have ammo and they've jacked the prices up as well, pretty lame.

How would you know? Have you been in line?

The line at the Academy on 183 north had very normal looking people. Mostly male, over 40, and they just want some ammunition.
