There's more BBQ joints here than you can shake a stick at. Most of the small towns have their local BBQ joint so it might be tough to get a foot hold. Best to research the towns you want to live in.
Austin and surrounding areas are very liberal. This is not the "deep south". I don't believe you or your son would have any problems. You probably want to take a week's vacation and drive around to do research first hand.
I don't know about Kyle or San Marcos but Round Rock has excellent schools.
Good luck to you.

I live in Kyle, Tx and I think it's a great idea for a BBQ joint. I believe we only have 2 little BBQ joint in town. We want other varieties and would be nice to see more restaurants here in town since there aren't many. Good luck!

In Kyle you could put one near the HEB Plus in Kyle off 35 and 1626 perfect spot.

Railroad BBQ in Kyle is the only one of two in town and has a loyal following. However, it is in the "old" part of Kyle. The 2nd opened recently in a cursed location on I-35 and most likely won't last. If you had a place on 1626 by the new HEB or even by Plum Creek Subdivision, you'd have a large customer base of folks that rarely, if ever, set foot into old Kyle. However, you will have to build a building most likely since this is a newly developed area and unless there's a restaurant spot in the HEB center available, there's no existing building to lease.
Southwest Market in San Marcos closed because they lost their lease and it was one of the best in Central TX but was relatively unknown...it was founded by a cook from Kreuz's who was there 14 years before opening SWM. It had a RABID following in SM. They are looking for a new location and I don't think anyone could compete with them.
For schools, I'd rank them RRISD, HCISD (kyle), and a distant 3rd SMISD.

African American style BBQ is the best in Texas. Even in Los Angeles there is such a huge demand for this type of BBQ

Is that actually a style of Barbecue? When I was in Denver, I used to go to a primarily AA neighborhood down the street from us for bbq, and they had soul food and bbq and it was primarily Kansas City style. Very, very, good! But it wasn't AA style. That would have been the rest of the menu, the soul food/southern thing.

Relocate from where? If you're coming from New York and want to start a BBQ Biz because this is Texas, you're better off in New York. It's tough here and you have to have really good BBQ to survive here. Not saying that you can't do it and be successful, but your best bet is doing something different and not calling it "Texas BBQ". Put a twist on it, different is better around here, remember that.
