We currently live in Omaha NE and love shopping at Aldi for their cheap cheap prices. I see the closest Aldi is about an hour north in Temple.

We will be moving to Austin at the end of June and I am wondering if anyone knows of plans in the works to build an Aldi in Austin? If not, who do you think is the lowest price grocery store?

Thanks for any input you have.

Doubtful. Between HEB, Randalls, Sprouts, Central Market (or as I call it, Central Markup, which is part of HEB) and Whole Foods (a.k.a., Whole Paycheck Foods) and the big box warehouses, I don't think Aldi would survive in this market.

Wait, where is there an Aldi in Temple? Like Bo, I thought that there were none in Texas for the reasons given.

In that case, it won't be many years until Aldi stores are open all over the state. Sounds like they're opening in a completely different set of markets than Trader Joe's.

Yes I guess Aldi is also in Fort Worth. Cool info about Trader Joes. I spent a few weeks in San Antonio this spring and shopped at HEB and for a "regular" grocery store I found their prices to be very good and along the lines of say WalMart grocery, but neither one can hold a candle to Aldi prices. Seems there is hope of one coming soon. Maybe I can email Aldi and ask.

I just told my husband and we're going to drive up there today to check it out. Will let y'all know what we find.

Trader Joe's is opening a couple of stores in Austin, I understand. Having been to the one in San Antonio it seems like a great store for someone who doesn't do a lot of their own cooking due to time or lack of interest, but likes a variety in packaged/frozen foods (and wine, though the prices were generally in line with what I pay at HEB for most things). Aldi's, from their website, looks like something more along the lines of Sam's or Costco, but we'll see what we find when we get there.

Thanks TexasHorseLady. I also just emailed their corporate people and will let you know what I found out. They respond M-F. So you may know something before me.

[mod cut: referring to post that has been deleted]

How come they've been popping up around the Houston area then?

So maybe they'll eventually come to Austin too.

My info was old. Apparently the parent corporation of Aldi did open a distribution hub in Texas. See posts #4-6.
