Do HOAs really dictate that you can't have solar panels? We thought we'd like to "green" up any house we move into. We not married to the idea of solar panels but it would suck if we wanted to do it and then couldn't.

How does Shady Hollow HOA feel about solar panels?

You'll have to look specifically at their HOA, but I think that in the older parts the HOA is less 'intrusive' (at least that is more common in most older neighborhoods), but you may be limited to where you can put panels....you probably wouldn't be able to put them out on the street side, so your house would have to be favorable situated to enable efficient solar panels that would not be visible from the street.

I looked online and read what they had posted on the HOA website. Seemed vague and had the standard type stuff.

No, solar panels do okay. My dad had some installed during the 80s when you got some ckind of tax rebate, and they did quite well. They were heating panels, though, for hot water. You would be amazed at the amount of heat you can put into your water heaters and swimming pool just by using heat transfer panels. They were shielded by a plexiglass type cover, so they were better off than our shingles, probably.

Don't know much about electric generating panels, though.....

I like the older neighborhood because they have less restrictions.

The City of Austin still rebates for solar panels big time: 45% - 75% of the cost. I've seriously thought about getting them installed, but the entry cost is high (even though I could get a bunch of that back). I also wanted to get a new metal roof first, since it would be difficult afterwards...

Solar Rebate Program

CoA provides many rebates for energy efficiency. I've gotten significant money back from them for installing a new high-efficiency A/C, solar screens, etc. They rebate for solar film too. Also, you can go to Austin Energy's office and pick up FREE shower heads, lawn watering timers, etc.
