Hello,
I am a teacher at a local school and could use tennis balls for the bottom of the chair legs in the classroom to reduce noise & protect the appearance of their floors.

I was thinking of contacting local tennis clubs, but wondered if you guys had any ideas or suggestions for used or rejected tennis ball donations?

Respectfully,
Christina

If you can find tennis instructors, they will have tons of old balls that are no longer useful for them.

Check with the local tennis centers. They usually have bins of balls.

Caswell Tennis Center
Austin HS Tennis Center (weekends or evenings)
South Austin Tennis Center
Pharr Tennis Center

Perhaps the local country clubs may be able to help as well.

Arf...good one!

I know the Parmer/1431 Goodwill has a couple dozen as of yesterday...dropped them off before I saw your post...along with a decent collection of vintage tennis rackets.

Let the tennis centers know you are looking and offer to leave a box or bin labeled as a collection for your school. Many times, patrons don't know the center collects balls for junior programs and such and don't think to leave them. Naturally, offer the best balls to the center for their hoppers, but make sure they know you don't need fresh, lively balls for your 'project'.

Glad to be of service().
Coming from one of the busiest tennis centers in the recreational tennis capital of the world, I've picked up a 'thing' or two. One summer, we had three schools 'fighting' for our used balls...each display collection box was more ornate than the next! Got to the point that we had to schedule/apportion the ball collections so it wouldn't get out of hand. Nice problem to have when your tennis center is 24 courts, packed virtually every morning and evening!

Fortunately, tennis ball cans are recyclable in some areas...UNfortunately, I don't know of any long-term use for really old tennis balls and golf balls. I would say the tennis balls could be ground up like car tires and athletic shoes, but the combination of natural and synthetic rubber and felt complicates matters, not to mention the relative scarcity of tennis balls compared to automobile tires.

Just one of the many conundra I couldn't address in my three decades as a tennis bum

By the bye, DO be careful if the balls are going to be used on slick floors(like on a walker in a nursing home or school with polished wood floors). The coefficient of friction between tennis ball felt and waxed/polished wood is similar to Teflon on glass!
