Just be sure if you go to Péché, to enjoy the awesome absinthe focused bar, but stay away from the wretched food.

Also hear Qui has a good bar program - if you want to fight the crowds. And second the nominations of Midnight Cowboy and Drink.Well.

I've had food at Peche several times and only had a couple times I didn't care for it. I'd argue hit or miss rather than wretched.

Eh. I'd err on the side of wretched. OP was asking about drinks though, so I didn't think food. 3-4 absinthe based cocktails and you don't give a rat's about the food.

I have to post here because I just went to the most amazing new specialty cocktail bar last night. I had no idea it existed. It's called CU29 and it is on 7th and Brazos (essentially behind the Driskill). It was unbelievable and the bartenders were great. The cocktails were very unique and exactly what OP was asking for. It is a slightly swankier vibe with jazz and such.

The drinks are $10-12 each, yes, but the guys are essentially cooking, in some cases literally. I had two different cocktails that included a creme brulee torch in their construction.

CU29 is a spin off of SOHO in San Antonio. Same owner and some of the staff from SOHO went up to Austin to work it. I agree on the cocktails, some very interesting and unique drinks.
