Hi Austinites,

I'm flying into town for a job interview tomorrow and would like to spend Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon exploring the town. Pretty unfamiliar with the city but I learn geography very quickly. Any suggestions for to-dos that aren't really touristy? Preferably places where I don't have to pay money or anything like that. Will likely be without a car but I do have a Car2Go membership.

I'm thinking of checking out the UT campus, perhaps the State Capitol, maybe the river. My time is super limited, so is there anything else worth visiting?

I'd say Barton Springs.

Austin is not a touristy town so there really isnt much touristy here

Wed night - esthers follies, see if someone from the interviewing company will take you. Eat dinner at rudy's.
*edit* they dont perform on wed night. Maybe lookup a band you might like

Eat at rudys bbq (closest one to you is fine). Get creamed corn and ask for extra moist brisket. Make sure it is shiny and falling apart vs a tight grain like a steak.

OR

Sushi - uchi/uchiko
Steak - I like sullivans, but lots of other people like other steak houses
Tex Mex - Chuys is good for out of towners, the one on barton springs is fine
Burgers - hop doddys, south congress
Food truck - east side kings
Ramen - tatsuya (can be a long line)
Southern - south congress cafe

Thursday morning - drive austin traffic and see the hill country. This will do a big loop through the hill country

Starting from downtown head west on 6th street
turn left to go south on mopac
exit 2244.
Head west on 2244 to 360 (aka capital of texas highway).
Turn right on 360 to go north
Drive to 2222 and go west (left turn)
Turn left at 620 and go south
Stop at mansfield dam park to see lake travis (very low lake levels)
continue south until you hit 71/2244 (You hit 71 for a very short distance)
Turn left onto 71, then left on 2244 (you will be going east)
Take 2244 all the way to mopac (you will pass 360)
Turn left on the mopac frontage which will turn into barton springs and back into the area south of the river

OR

Get on mopac north and exit 1st/5th to get back to downtown

---------

Walk/jog ladybird lake, rent a kayak or a stand up paddle board.

Hang out at barton springs (like others have said)

Search out austin meetups to find people who are doing an activity you like to do (running, swimming, cycling, soccer, basketball etc)

- What part of town is your interview?
- What part of town are you staying?
- What's your approx. age?
- What do you like to do for fun (what do you like to eat)?

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked up Barton Springs, but unfortunately my ankle is injured so I can't really do anything recreational. Walking/strolling is about it.

- The interview will be a couple miles east of downtown, on the other side of I-35.
- I'll be at the airport Hilton.
- Mid-20s.
- Not really into clubs/bars or anything, but would be interested in street fairs/festivals (if any are going on then). As far as food is concerned, not too picky, but I was hoping to try BBQ or Tex-Mex, since it is Texas.

Hit up Franklins (brisket) or J Mueller's on east 6th and get beef short rib.

Both are closed in the evening, and there is an almost certainty that both would be sold out by Thursday afternoon.

Styles Switch or Lambert's are good later day barbecue choices. Not as good as JMMCo or Franklin, but good.
